Scene 1

(Music is playing, some students are stretching on the stage. Three girls are talking to each other. Most people are sitting in the audience writing. They are filling out an information sheet. It is the first day back to college at Midlakes University. Auditions for the annual musical have begun. The returning students know the drill, and the few freshman who have been accepted are praying to do a good job. A small blonde girl walks up to another tall beautiful blonde sitting in the audience.)

Stephanie: (cheerfully)Can I sit here?

Andrea:(she replies) Sure.

Stephanie: Hi, Im Stephanie Wheeler. Im a junior. I was accepted here from Tufts.

Andrea: Thats great.

Stephanie: Yeah, I wanted to be a doctor, but when I got accepted here.....

Andrea:(Interrupting. She turns toward Stephanie.) Listen, thats all great, but I dont care. So either sit down and fill out your sheet or leave because I dont want to be here all day filling mine out while you sit next to me and ruin my concentration.

Stephanie:(surprised) Okay.

(A few seconds go by and Andrea takes a peek at Stephanies sheet. She gets a confused look on her face.)

Andrea: Any?

Stephanie: Excuse me?

Andrea: Preferred part, any.(she sighs, rolls her eyes, and turns her head) Who do you think youre kidding. You think that if you put down any, hell say oh, shes so modest. I think Ill give her a big part. I put lead(gestures to her paper) Because thats what I want. He sees this and thinks now heres a girl who knows what she wants. Shell work for it and give me what I want.(pause) You put down any and thats a sure fire way to get in the chorus.

Scene 2

(On stage. Three girls are talking to each other and laugh.)

Bonnie: But I dont know why.

Katie: Well did you ask him, I mean, how will you ever know if you dont ask him?

Megan: No Bonnie, dont. Hell think youre crazy! Anyway, you already know the answer.

Bonnie: Shut up Megan. Its not true.

Katie: I think it is. He likes you. Matt likes you.

Bonnie: We were just talking. Its not like...

Megan: Jesus, Bonnie has all the guys after her.

Katie: Really, Matt and Todd.

Megan: (interrupting) Damn it, what time is it?

Bonnie: Three thirty, why?

Megan: No! Ive got the Theatrical Analysis Meeting with the Dean and the board. I cant be late for another one!

Katie: Hurry up Miss President.

Megan: Okay, Ill be back by five. And Ill try not to miss auditions. I want to see how you guys do. If I dont make it in time, good luck.

Bonnie and Katie: Thanks.

(Megan runs off a side door.)

Bonnie: That girl is stupid.

Katie: Shes the student president of theatre. Youd think shed write this stuff down. How did she ever get elected anyway?

(Bonnie and Katie look at each other, shake their heads, and laugh.)

Scene 3

(A guy and a girl walk down one of the auditoriums aisles. He is shorter than she is. Other than that, they could be brother and sister. She is tall and has dark like him. The are talking to each other and seem to be in a rush.)

Todd: Listen, Ive got five minutes. Auditions start in an hour and Im already late as it is.

Noelle: I know Todd, but Ive really got to do this.

Todd: Ive got my own work to do and, Noelle, what are you doing? Look, Ill help you at Burger World. Youre going after auditions anyway. I havent even started to fill out my paper.(Flips through some papers and books.) You know my report for Lit, I havent even started. Its due tomorrow. This will be the third time this semester Ill be up late doing it.

Noelle: You always get those things done somehow. Youre at the top of the class anyway. Take some time to relax. Youre always so tense.

Todd: I always get them done because Im up until three doing them. This program kills me. I never have any time. You know how hard Ive practiced for this show. Ive doubled my vocal coachings. I want that part.

Noelle: Youll get it. This is your fifth show. You deserve it. Youre always helping out...

Todd:(interrupts) Look theres Andrea. Im late. Shes gonna kill me. Wanna stop over and say hi?

Noelle: No thanks. Why do you even spend time on her? She hates everybody.

Todd: Even the meanest people need friends. Im the only one shes got, or really got, at least. I know she can be a real bitch, but what are you gonna do? Shes on a high horse and no one can knock her down.

Noelle: Ill go over with you but I wont say anything.

Todd: Fine.

(They walk over.)

Andrea: Todd, youre late. You know I needed you to take a look at my paper, but now, oh no its too late. God forbid you should be on time.

Todd: Nice to see you too. Listen, Ive been going over the numbers... (Looks at Stephanie)Hello, my names Todd. Im the vice president of Midlakes theatre program. Are you a freshman?

Stephanie: No, Im a junior. I spent my freshman and sophomore year in Boston working toward...

Andrea: (talking at the same time as Stephanie) So what did you...

Stephanie: But I got accepted here...

Andrea: Save it for later sweetie. Like you were saying.

Stephanie:(gets up pissed) I hope I see you around.(walks away)

Noelle:(walking away with Stephanie) Oh I love that sweater.

Todd: Jesus Andrea, have a heart.

Andrea: Do I look like I have time. Screw the goddamn accounts. Sit down and fill out your sheet.

(Todd rolls his eyes and sits down. Andrea shoots him a dirty look. Todd laughs under his breath.)

Scene 4

(A guy and a girl are sitting in the front row having an argument. She is skinny with reddish blonde hair. He is tall and has blonde hair.)

Jessica: (noticeably angry. gesturing all over the place.) If I knew this relationship was going to be so hard for you to handle, I wouldnt have said yes.

Weston: Dont even say that. It was fine until you started hanging out with Rick.

Jessica: Oh, now youre going to blame him. He used to be your best friend. What the hell ever happened to you guys anyway? And what the hell is so bad about our relationship? I would really like to know.

Weston: Whats wrong with it? Youre never there. Always out partying.

Jessica:(interrupting) Oh, now wait, I dont think so. I invited you to those parties. Im sick of you thinking that.

Weston: I just hate to see you doing that.

Jessica: You never do? Dont even make yourself seem too good for me, youre just as bad, even worse. (Loudly) Its Weston Hemmenway, goddamn perfect person!

Weston: Keep it down. Jesus, do you want everyone to know that we cant even handle our own relationship. I dont want to fight, can we stop? Im sick of it.

Jessica: Okay, fine. (pause) . Anyway...

Rick:(interrupting) Hey guys, whats going on?

Jessica and Weston: Rick.

Scene 5

(Auditions are about to get underway. Everyone is filing into their seats. There about one hundred people auditioning. About twenty are the new freshmen who have been accepted. The others are veterans or transfers. Todd sits with Noelle who is talking to Stephanie. Weston and Jessica are sitting next to each other, although Jessica is talking to Rick and Weston is giving her a look. Bonnie and Katie are sitting with some friends. (Liz, Sherry, Christina. Andrea is in leopard fur and leather, looking at Todd.)

Noelle: Youre never gonna believe this. They gave her Margarets old room.

Stephanie: Whos Margaret?

Noelle: She used to be one of the stars here. When Andrea was a freshman, she got the lead. Margaret was pissed. She swore shed never act again. She got in a big fight with the director. And she was right. She never did act again. On the way back to her dorm room, she got hit by a car.

Todd: Died instantly.

Noelle: I didnt know her too well. I had only talked to her once. Anyway, hey wait, are you moved in yet?

Stephanie: No, my things are still at dorm headquarters.

Noelle: This may sound crazy, I know I just met you and all, but I have an apartment right off the campus. The rent kills me, but if you move in, we can split it. Ive been looking for a roommate. My old roommate Tiffany got kicked out for prostitution or something. Cmon, itd be so much fun.

Stephanie: I dont know...

Noelle: Youll love it.

Stephanie: But...

Todd: You really should. I mean, almost every one in the theatre program lives off campus. Who wants to live in those dorms. And face it, if you go to this school, then you probably have the money to afford it. Look at Jessica. Her daddy pays for her apartment. Its really a ballet studio.

Stephanie: It is?

Todd: No. Shes just got one of those wall mirrors that dancers use. Noelles daddy pays for hers and my mom splits the rent with me. You see, My great grandma died and left all her money to my mom. Its nice cause it was like half a million dollars and since its just me and my mom. Anyway, we all have money at this school. Its just the way it is. If youre offered an apartment, take it. I wouldnt be caught dead in those dorms.

Stephanie: Are you sure?

Noelle: Yes, Im sure.

Stephanie: Alright. I dont know what Im doing. Im never this spontaneous.

Noelle: Itll be great. Well be roomies. And Todds always over.

Stephanie: Thats awesome. Youre the only two people whove talked to me since I got here. Oh, and Andrea.

Todd: Dont worry her bark is worse than her bite.

Noelle: I wouldnt count on that.

Todd: Howd you get accepted here?

Stephanie: Well, everyone in my family is a doctor. Its just what I was born to do. I got accepted into Tufts in Boston and my family went nuts. I studied there, and loved it, I really did. More than anything. But I needed something more. There was this workshop there. They were gonna put on Romeo and Juliet. I wanted to have something to do so I tried out and got Juliet. Somebody right must have been watching because one week later, I got a letter from Midlakes asking if Id like to transfer. I couldnt resist. My mom went crazy, but I dont care, because Im here doing what I love.

Noelle: Isnt that the awesomest story. I wish something like that would happen to me.

Todd: Well Im glad you chose to come here. I can tell were gonna have a lot of fun.

(Then, the director walks in. Three ladies are behind him. Everyone sits up and he begins to speak.)

Prof. Childs: Hello and welcome to another year of Midlakes Theatre.(the audience claps) My name is Keith E. Childs and I am the director of the program. My president, Megan Malchoff, is at a meeting now, but the vice president is Todd Gonzalez over... where are you Todd?

Todd: ( he gestures) Right here.

Prof. Childs: Oh. Right there everybody. The treasurer is Katie Parker, in the back, and the secretary is Noelle Rich, up here by Todd. Behind me are my musical directors, Deb and Carol, and my costume director, Virginia. We are the staff of the Theatre Experience. First Id like to say that if youre here, than youre doing something right. Only the best and most talented actors are accepted into this program, and many of you wont make it. And thats no fault of mine. This isnt open auditions so all of you have something in you that I saw and thought I wanted. Shine today if you want to be in my show. I want to hear you. Only the best will make it and only the best will be back next year. Now, on to the show. I know how much talent I have this year so I chose something hard. It is one of the most challenging shows ever written. State Fair. And I want it done right. Auditions will begin with vocals. Youll have about ten minutes to learn a song and then sing it one by one onstage. Then, dance auditions will happen after that. If I need to, Ill have you read and maybe hear you sing again. Everybody, good luck. And if you dont make it, please help on the show. And I dont want to here anybody say that someone got their part. Because if it was your part you would have gotten it. Nothing pisses me off more than that. Lets begin, shall we?

(Briefly the ensemble is shown learning the song and the characters sing a brief portion by themselves. Then it shows everyone dancing, most of the focus being on the introduced characters.)

Prof. Childs: Good job everybody. Cast List will be posted at ten oclock in the morning. Good Luck.

Scene 6

(Noelle is driving her car, Stephanie is in the passenger seat and Todd is in the back seat. They are driving to a fast food restaurant.)

Stephanie: So you guys go to this place all the time?

Noelle: Oh yeah. Were here after almost every rehearsal. Its a good place to hang out and talk.

Todd: (He leans his head up between the two front seats.)(Sarcastically) Oh, that was fun. I love auditions.

Stephanie: I was so nervous up there on stage singing by myself. I thought I was gonna die.

Todd: Yeah, but its over now. And we all did great.

Stephanie: And now I have to try to sleep tonight wondering if Im gonna make it.

Noelle: Dont worry about it.

Todd: Yeah, now its just time to have fun.

Scene 7

(Jessica and Weston are also driving to the fast food restaurant. They pull into the parking lot and go in. They are the first ones there so they go and sit down.)

Weston: Whats wrong?

Jessica: Im still mad at you.

Weston: About what? What did I do to you?

Jessica: You never let me do anything. I cant ever have any fun. Thats all you ever want to do is study and sleep.

Weston: And have sex.

Jessica: That can be changed.

Weston: Ive always got my hand.

Jessica: (she hits him) I dont think youre funny. You know, youre really pissing me off.

Weston: Im sorry. What can I do to make it up to you?

Jessica: Will you do anything?

Weston: Anything. You name it, you got it.

Jessica: Fine were having a party tonight.

Weston: Jessica, no. Ive really got to study for my Lit exam. I need to pass it.

Jessica: Well go to the library. Its my apartment anyway.

Weston: Well do you want me to move out, cause if you do...

Jessica: No Weston, thats not what I want. I just want...

Weston: Can we stop talking about this?

Jessica: Now youre just gonna cut me off. I see how you are. (she crosses her arms.)

Weston: No, thats not it. Bonnie and Katie are coming and I really dont want them to here us arguing about the stupid little things we argue about.

Jessica: Fine. Bonnie, Katie, hi!

Scene 8

(Noelle, Todd and Stephanie pull up in a car to a fast food restaurant. They are walking to the door.)

Noelle: This is Burger World. I know, I know. It sounds like of one of those burger joints from some cheesy teen flick, but it works. We always come here after rehearsal.

(They walk in and go to a table where Weston, Jessica, Bonnie, and Katie are.)

Todd: Everyone, this is Stephanie. Thats Weston Jessica, Bonnie, Katie...wheres everyone else?

Jessica: There coming. Hi Stephanie, are you a freshman?

Stephanie: No, Im a junior. I transferred. (to Todd) Do I really look that young? Everyone thinks Im a freshman.

Todd: Well, come on, youre barely five feet.

Stephanie: Hey!

Jessica: You must be pretty special if Midlakes wanted you.

Stephanie: I dont know about that.

Jessica: Well, you sounded great today. Have a seat.(She moves over and makes room for Stephanie.)

Stephanie: Whered you learn to dance like that? I couldnt take my eyes off your feet.

Jessica: Ive been dancing since I was three. I love to do it. I was accepted into five schools of dance, but turned them all down to come here. You dont turn down Midlakes.

Stephanie: I know the feeling.

Bonnie: (introducing herself) Hi, Im Bonnie Coggeshall.

Katie: And Im Katie.

(Megan and Rick come in. So do two girls and a guy.)

Megan: Howd you guys do? I missed it.

Bonnie: Katie did awesome. I didnt do so hot. I was so quiet.

Noelle: Sherry, Liz. Come sit over here.

Sherry: Its freezing out.

Liz: I know, its so cold.

Matt: Whats going on?

Todd: Shouldnt you be somewhere with Randy?

Matt: No, hes got practice tonight. Anyway, hes nobody since he left the theatre program. I wouldnt be caught dead with him.

Todd: Nice.

(everyone is getting acquainted. Stephanie is introducing herself to the newcomers.)

Jessica: Are you all coming to my party tonight?

Weston: Jessica, I thought we talked about this. Were not having a party.

Jessica: Weston dont be such an asshole. Its at our apartment, tonight at eight.

Rick: Ill be there.

Weston: Im sure you will.

Rick: What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Weston: Exactly like it sounds.

Jessica: Will you two cut it out. Im sick of all this. Cant everything just go back to the way it was.

Todd: Cast List goes up tomorrow at ten. The moment none of us can wait for, but all of us dread.

Stephanie: I know. Is everybody as nervous as I am?

(Everyone breaks out into conversation and it continues under the next few lines.)

Jessica: I cant believe you did that Weston. Im trying to have a good time.

Weston: Im sick of it Jessica. Im just fed up.

Jessica: Well the world doesnt revolve around you so shut the hell up.
(she gets up and goes over to sit by Noelle. Andrea walks in everyone shuts up.)

Todd: Andrea would you like to join us?

Andrea: Why not.

(Nobody likes Andrea, but everyone pretends they do. After all, she is the leading lady in Midlakes theatre. Todd is the only one who really likes her, or at least tries to.)

Stephanie: Andrea, you did awesome. Ive never heard anybody sing like that before.

Andrea: I know. Todd, did you get a chance to look at my papers.

Todd: Yeah, its good, but lacks emotion. When you write, youve gotta use your feelings.

Andrea: Well, I wont have you read my papers anymore.

Stephanie: Hes right. The technique is flawless, but it doesnt have any depth.

Andrea: Who the hell do you think you are? Was I asking you?

Stephanie: No, but I.....

Andrea: What, but nothing. I wasnt asking for your help.

Todd: Thats enough.

Andrea: Listen, I dont want to get involved with you, so why dont you stay out of my business?

Stephanie: Hey, I was just trying to help. What the hell crawled up your ass?

Andrea: Ooh, thems fighting words. You little bitch, Ill take you down so hard.

Stephanie: Id like to see you try. ( The restaurant has become completely quiet.)

Andrea: Whatever you stupid little slut.

Todd: Hey!

Andrea: Im leaving. Todd are you coming?

Todd: Well, Im not finished with my...

Andrea: Dont you even...

Todd: Fine. See you tomorrow everybody. ( They begin to walk out.)

Andrea: You will not treat me like that. I got you into this program.

Todd: Yeah, well now Im vice president.

Andrea: Oh, now youre turning the tables?

(Everyone eases back into the swing of things.)

Stephanie: What the hell is up with her?

Noelle: I dont know.

Stephanie: Shes got Todd wrapped around her finger.

Noelle: No, believe me, she doesnt. Hes just too nice to her to hurt her feelings.

(They talk for a little while longer and people begin to say goodbye and leave.)

Noelle: Everybody, good luck tomorrow.

Scene 9

(Andrea is driving home from the Burger World and Todd is in the passenger seat. It is getting pretty late out)

Andrea: You had no right to let her read my paper.

Todd: Im sorry. What do you have against everybody Andrea?

Andrea: Nothing.

Todd: Well, it just seems to me that you hate everybody.

Andrea: I dont hate everybody.

Todd: Really?

Andrea: Yes. I dont hate a lot of people. I like people.

Todd: Like who?

Andrea: I like you.

Todd: Yeah, I guess.

Andrea: (she looks at Todd)What are you trying to say?

Todd: Nothing.

Andrea: What did you mean by...

Todd: Nothing really. But why do you act like a rotten bitch towards everyone?

Andrea: Because they think they can come to this program and be some kind of great actor. Most of them shouldnt be here. Most of them arent any good. Theyre just taking spots from people that deserve them. Dont you think so?

Todd: Most of them are awesome. I mean who cant you stand?

Andrea: First of all, theres Weston and Jessica. What the hell is that all about? One second, theyre at each others throats, and the next, theyre all over each other. It just makes me sick.

Todd: All couples are like that.

Andrea: Am I like that?

Todd: No, cause you keep your boyfriend on a leash. Hes scared to death of you.

Andrea: Well then theres Bonnie and Katie. I mean, nobody can be that cheerful all of the time. It just pisses me off. Theyre so fake. I hate people who are fake nice just to get ahead in the world. Just to make a few extra friends.

Todd: They really are nice. I mean, so what, as long as theyre not being a bitch.

Andrea: I take it that was directed at me?

Todd: (sarcastically) No, of course not.

Andrea: And worst of all is your new friend, Steph whatever. I mean, I can tell Im gonna hate her already. Shes so selfish and conceited.(Mockingly) Hi, Im Stephanie and Im a freaking doctor and an actress. So multi-faceted.

Todd: Shes a nice girl. What is it really though? Are you afraid?

Andrea: Afraid of what?

Todd: There are so many actors and so few leads.

Andrea: No, Im an actress. Im a lead. Nobody can knock me down. I will always be a lead. I wont have some small time girl be taking all my parts.

Todd: Isnt that what Margaret Keller said about you?

Andrea: (She pulls up to Todds apartment building.) Hey, she ran out in front of my car. Its not like I was aiming for her or anything. Besides, you promised youd never tell anyone that it was me who hit her.

Todd: And I wont. I wont ever tell anybody.(He opens the door, steps out and puts his head back in.) Listen, get some sleep. Tomorrows a big day, for you and me. (She drives off. Todd stands for a second then goes up the steps of his apartment building and goes in.)

Scene 10

(The next day. Midlakes University is a huge brick building. It has a central entrance with steps in front of the large doors. Inside the doors is Central Hall. It is a wide area. with marble floors and seats. A student comes running in.)

Student: Its up!

(There is a mad dash. A crowd of people. Who rush to the farthest wall, where there is a bulletin board. It is very loud. Two girls emerge from the crowd crying. One is holding the other. Two freshman girls are laughing and jumping up and down together.)

Girl in crowd: (screaming) I didnt make it, I didnt make it!

Guy in crowd: Oh my God, youre in. You made it.

(Todd and Andrea walk up. Noelle and Stephanie follow them and Jessica and Weston are at the end. Andrea finds her name.)

Andrea: Im the mother. Im the freaking mother. What the hell is this?

(She marches off.)

Noelle:(to Stephanie) We made it! We both made it!

Stephanie: Oh my God! Congratulations! Were in!

Noelle: Todd!, Todd! What did you get? Howd you do?

Todd: Im Matts understudy. (hes too worried about Andrea to think)

Noelle: Is that it? Youre just an understudy.

Todd: No, Im in the chorus too. And Im a Fairtone.

Stephanie: Well, hey, look on the bright side. We all get to be together.

Todd: Yeah, thats great. Hey, Jessica, Congratulations.

Jessica: What? I havent seen it yet.

Todd: Hurry up and look, youre a lead.

Jessica: (Screams) Oh my God Im Emily! Im Emily!

Weston: Thats great, lets go.

Jessica: What is it? Whats wrong?

Weston: Nothing. Lets go.

(He drags Jessica off. Bonnie and Katie come up with Liz and Sherry)

Bonnie: Hey guys, howd you do?

Noelle: We all made chorus!

(Liz is up looking at the cast list while everyone else is talking.)

Liz: Oh my God, Bonnie! Youre the lead. Youve got the biggest part.

Bonnie:(quickly turns her head at Liz.) What?

Liz: Youre the lead. Hurry, look!

Bonnie: Oh my, Im Margy, Im the lead.

Katie: Let me see. Watch out!

(Katie walks away, discouraged.)

Todd: Hey, Katie, we can be understudy buddies.

Katie: Im Andreas understudy. Thats a scary thought.

Sherry: Looks like all three of us are understudies. Im Bonnies.

Todd: Sherry, I had you picked for that part. Youre voice is so great. I thought you had it locked up.

Noelle: Yeah, Sherry be happy. You sounded great. I thought you had it.

Bonnie: Im the lead. Im the lead.

Liz: Were all in the show, we all made it.

(Matt walks in and goes to the list. He walks back to the group.)

Matt: Looks like youre my understudy Todd.

Todd: Congratulations on getting the part.

Matt: Was there ever a doubt I wasnt going to get that part.

Stephanie: Hey, why dont you shut up.

Todd: Come on, dont be like that Matt.

Matt: Sorry, Im just so proud of myself. I always get my way and dont expect anything to change anytime soon.

Todd: Watch it Matt. One of these days somethings not gonna go your way and youll be sorry.

Matt: Whatever. Brents waiting for me. Were going to a party.

Todd: Randys not cool enough for you anymore? I see youve moved on to Brent. Anyone who can get you places. Thats the way is works, right?

Matt: Thank you for the insight.(He leaves.)

Noelle: Are you all right?

Todd: Im fine. I dont need the part. Its not the most important thing in the world. Lets go to somewhere. Im bored.

Scene 11

(Bonnie, Katie, Liz, Christina, and Sherry have gone to Burger World. They are sitting at a table.)

Sherry: All of us were up for Margy. Im glad that one of us got it.

Bonnie: Thank you Sherry. And to celebrate, Im ordering everyone a shake.

Katie: I dont believe Im Andreas understudy.

Liz: Dont be bummed about not getting a lead.

Katie: Its not that. Im afraid that if I mess up, Andrea will bite my head off. I dont want her to think that Im a bad actress.

Christina: Well, like who cares what she thinks?

Liz: Dont worry about her. She cant do anything to you. Physically at least. She really knows how to lower your spirits though.

Sherry: Yeah, shes a real bitch.

Liz: Did you see the way she ran out when she found out she was the mother?

Christina: Youd have thought it was like the end of the world.

Katie: Please dont talk about her. I have to work with her everyday.

Bonnie: So do I. Shes my mom.

Liz: I feel sorry for you guys.

Sherry: At least Im Bonnies understudy.

Christina: Well, I wasnt even up for a lead.

Sherry: Dont worry about it.

Christina: Its just weird. I was a lead last year, and like this year I wasnt even up for one.

Katie: Being a lead isnt so great. You only get to spend time with other leads. The chorus is so much fun. Everyone becomes good friends.

Liz: Maybe youll get Jeanne or Vivian. He talks like he wants you for one of them.

Christina: That would be cool. Im not angry that I didnt get a lead, it just feels weird. I think Ill have fun in the chorus. At least I get to dance.

Sherry: So dish it Bonnie, whos it gonna be, Todd or Matt?

Bonnie: Sherry! I dont know, maybe neither. I dont know right now.

Christina: Well, whichever one you pick, its like gonna totally make the other one like really mad.

Liz: I think you should pick Todd.

Katie: Youre just saying that cause you like Matt.

Liz: Well, cant I ever get what I want?

Bonnie: Can we change the subject?

Christina: Okay, like this show is gonna be totally awesome.

Katie: Well, only Bonnie has a lead.

Liz: Well, at least none of us got cut. That would be really hard to be friends if one of us didnt make it.

Sherry: Yeah, but we all did. Did you see that one girl who didnt? I thought she was gonna die.

Bonnie: People take this stuff way too seriously. I swear, Ill never let it go to my head. Youve got girls crying who didnt make it, and Andrea crying when she got a lead. Shes got some serious issues.

Scene 12

(In the auditorium. All the lights are off except a single spotlight in the center of the stage. Andrea is sitting on the ground in the middle of the spotlight.)

Andrea: The mother. Who the hell am I anymore? Have I lost all of my power in this goddamn program? Now, Ive got stupid little bitches like Bonnie Coggeshall and Jessica Pieters taking all my parts. I could play anything, but no, I get the mother. I dont even get my own song. Childs is grooming his next prima donna. Hes creating my successor and throwing me away. Thats exactly how it was for me. And now, Im almost finished with college and hes got to find somebody to take my place. Mark my words, I wont let it happen. Nobody is gonna get rid of me. Not Bonnie, not Jessica, and not even Prof. Childs. Someday hell be sorry when Im a famous actress. Ill show him. Nobody messes with Andrea Burch and gets away with it. Nobody takes my parts away from me.

(The house lights come up, but very dimly. Andrea stands up.)

Andrea: Whos there?

Bonnie:(very quietly) Its just me. I was looking for you.

Andrea: Yeah, well what do you want?

Bonnie: Actually, um, I just thought that since well be together a lot, we should get to know each other. I mean, I dont really know you and I figured that maybe we could go out to eat at Burger World or...

Andrea: (interrupts) What are you up to?

Bonnie: Nothing, I just wanted to get to know you. I mean, I saw you in Will Rogers last year. I came here as a senior in high school to watch the show and I saw you and wanted to be just like you. Youre such a great actress.

Andrea: Listen. Youll never be like me. You dont have what it takes to be me. I dont care what Prof. Childs sees in you, you will never be a great actress. And if you ever try to steal another lead from me, Ill hunt you down and kill you.

Bonnie: I just...

Andrea: I dont want to be your friend. Youre too nice for me.

(Andrea leaves and Bonnie just stands there in awe.)

Scene 13

(Jessicas apartment. Her father has paid for it. One of the walls is covered by a mirror. There is a bar in front of it. She is dancing when Weston walks in.)

Weston: Oh honey, you made dinner. Where are the kids?

Jessica: Funny. Listen, What was that all about today?

Weston: You had just gotten a lead and I didnt. I was a little jealous, thats all.

Jessica: You were jealous of me? Wait, Will Rogers was jealous of me?

Weston: Dont let it go to your head.

Jessica: Hey, all this trouble weve been having lately, do you think itll stop know that these auditions are done? Maybe it was just the stress and all.

Weston: Im sure. Im sorry about being a jerk.

Jessica: No, you were right. I party way too much. Listen, now that I have this part, Ill be working really hard and there wont be time to party.

Weston: Dont think I dont like to have fun.

Jessica: I dont think that. We have a lot of fun together. Its just that, well, I dont know. Im sorry too.

Weston: Wait a minute, did I just here you apologize to me. No, this cant be happening.

Jessica: Shut up. Lets go to Noelles.

Scene 14

(Noelles apartment. Todd and Noelle are helping to unpack Stephanies things. The phone rings. Noelle goes to answer. Todd and Stephanie go sit on the couch. Drop Dead Gorgeous is on the TV in front of them.)

Noelle: Hello? Oh, nothing. Were unpacking Stephanies stuff. I know. Todd and Stephanie. Sure. Well Bonnie and Katie are coming. Who else? Rick, Liz, Megan, Greg, Mike.(shes shocked) Thats a lot of people, my apartment isnt that big. I know itll be fun, but, oh what the heck, why not.

(The whole time, Todd has been gesturing to Noelle about whos on the phone. She is shaking her head.)

Stephanie: Whats up with that Matt kid?

Todd: Oh, hes alright. Just really spoiled. His parents are billionaires or something.

Stephanie: Well, hes a real jerk.

Todd: He doesnt mean it. He used to be one of my best friends. My best friend. That was a long time ago, though. Hes moved on to bigger and better things.

Noelle: Okay. Seven thirty sounds great.(she hangs up)

Todd: Who was that?

Noelle: Jessica. I guess were having a little get together here.

Stephanie: Now wait, Jessica is the...

Todd: Okay, youre new here so well tell you about everyone. You need to know.

Noelle: Jessica is the skinny dancer. Shes going out with Weston. Hes the tall blond.

Stephanie: The dorky one?

Todd: No, thats Rick. Hes Westons best friend.

Noelle: No, not anymore.

Todd: Are you sure?

Noelle: Yes, Im sure. They had this falling out. Once Weston got accepted here, he never talked to Rick. Rick got mad and went to Jessica. She got mad and went to Weston. Now theres this whole uneasy tension between them. Ricks still friends with Jessica....

Todd:(interrupts) and that totally pisses Weston off.

Noelle: You see, Rick went out with Westons sister Bonnie.

Stephanie: Bonnie, the lead? I thought her name was Coggeshall?

Todd: It is.

Stephanie: And isnt Westons last name Hemenway?

Noelle: Yes. They step brother and sister. And Todd is totally in love with her.

Todd: So what. Shes the most beautiful girl Ive ever seen.

Stephanie: So Bonnie and Weston are brother and sister and they both got accepted here?

Noelle: Yeah, I know, its weird. But anyway. I guess Bonnie got pissed at Rick and told Weston or something.

Stephanie: Totally weird.

Todd: Anyway, we have to get this place cleaned up. You two put Stephanies things away and Ill make horduerves!

Scene 15

(The party is underway. Everyone from the cast somehow found out about the get together and the place is packed. Todd is working double time in the kitchen trying to make enough snacks. Its really crowded, but despite that everyone is having a good time. Rehearsals start tomorrow. The show is the topic of conversation.)

Noelle: How the hell many people are here?

Stephanie: Practically the whole cast. I hope your floor doesnt give way.

(Jessica walks up to them.)

Jessica: Jesus Noelle, I thought only Katie and Bonnie were coming.

Noelle: Me too. (Jessica leaves.) Did she invite all these people?

Todd: (he comes out with a plate of finger sandwiches or something.) Noelle, youre out of beer.

Noelle: Thank God. You know I dont drink that crap.

Todd: Well this is a party.

Noelle: I dont want my apartment to be some place for keggers.

Todd: Noelle.

Noelle: Refrigerator. Top shelf. Behind the milk. There should be a twelve pack, minus two.

Stephanie: (shoots Noelle a look.) You dont drink that crap?

Noelle: Its for my beer battered fries... or something.

Stephanie: Okay. (they laugh)

Todd: (He comes back out with the case) More beer!

Stephanie: Ill have one.

Noelle: Me too.

(The beer is gone quickly)

Todd: First rehearsal is tomorrow.

Stephanie: I know. Then three months of it. I dont know how any of you make it through.

Noelle: Dont worry, you get used to it. And its a lot of fun anyway.

Stephanie: Well, I cant wait.

(On the other side of the room.)

Bonnie: I cant believe that tomorrow, Ill walk into that auditorium with a lead. Katie you dont know how this feels.

Katie: No, I dont.(She walks away.)

Bonnie: Whats her problem.

Megan: Hmmm, maybe its the fact that she didnt get a lead and you keep rubbing it in her face.

Bonnie: I would never do that, shes my best friend.

Megan: Well dont look now, but thats what you just did.

(Megan walks away and Bonnie goes over to talk with Liz, Christina, and Sherry. On the other side of the room, Todd, Stephanie, and Noelle are still talking. Now, Jessica and Weston have joined them.)

Stephanie: Did you always want to be an actor?

Todd: Hell no! I still dont. This is just a side thing. Im good at it. We all are, thats why were here. I just rank my studies higher. Im going to be an accountant or a news anchor or a cat farmer or something. I mean some of us want to be actors. Andrea will be one. She wont settle for anything less. I mean Jessica wants to dance, not act. Noelle, tell her what you want to do.

Stephanie: What?

Todd: Cmon. Tell her.

Noelle: Fine. Ever since I was a little girl, Ive wanted to be a ballerina. But trust me, Im not one of the ten best dancers at Midlakes.

Todd: Thats right, she number eleven.

Noelle: But Im not going to school for that. (She hits Todd who is laughing.) I want to be a.... You guys never take me seriously.

Todd: I can just see you dancing all day with those feet, youll get so many blisters!( He starts to laugh again. Everyone else is too.)

Noelle: Well that would just be a hobby. Im going to school for elementary education.

Stephanie: You all know each other so well.

Jessica: Thats what happens when you spend every day together for three years.

Noelle: After a while, you cant stand each other.

Weston: And you look forward to the breaks in between shows just to get away for them.

Stephanie: Well this show is gonna be great. I can feel it. Tomorrow will be the start of something great.

Scene 16

(Noelles apartment. Everyone has gone. Theyve left a mess. Its late out, well after midnight. Todd is sitting on the couch, a can of reddi-whip in hand. He is leaning back. Stephanie comes in. She is in her pajamas.)

Stephanie: What are you still doing here?

Todd: (he looks back, surprised to see her.) Oh, nothing. Just cleaning up. Did I wake you up?

Stephanie: No, I was just getting a glass of water. (she sits down next to him.)

Todd: Want some? (he offers the reddi-whip)

Stephanie: Sure. (she takes it, tilts her head back and sprays it in her mouth) Not bad.

Todd: I used to eat this stuff all the time when I was little.

Stephanie: Me too.

Todd: I used to do a lot of things when I was little.

Stephanie: But some things you can do now, you couldnt do back then.

Todd: Yeah, but now, every thing has consequences. Everything you do matters. Weve lost the innocence we had when we were kids and picked up a ton of responsibility.

Stephanie: Did you like being a kid?

Todd: Sometimes. I loved high school. But I regret most of it. Now that Im an adult, I wish I could be a kid again. I wish I could do it all over. Now, its real. No dress rehearsals. Every decision you make is final. And it matters. Whatever you decide is gonna change your life forever, and the decisions the people around you make change you too.

Stephanie: I know what you mean. Coming here changed my life. My parents werent happy, but I dont care. They deserve what they get. Im my own person. Im not my sister. When I was little, I was always expected to end up just like her. But I dont want to be her and my parents will just have to deal with that. Im not living for them anymore. Maybe I came here to rebel against them. To show them Im my own person. Maybe I came here to show myself that I can be my own person. We always have so much to prove to ourselves and we dont even notice it.

Todd: I feel exactly the same. Theres always something I have to prove to myself. Were kindred spirits.

Stephanie: Yeah, do you feel...

Todd: (interrupts) like weve known each other since first grade. Yeah, I do.

Stephanie: Maybe we knew each other in a past life.

Todd: Hopefully we were free back then.

Stephanie: Everyone has some kind of demon that theyll never be free from, you just have to learn how to keep it from escaping and tormenting you.

Todd: That sounds so philosophical, did you read that some where?

Stephanie: No, I always get like this at night.

Todd: See ya tomorrow. (he gets up and leaves. Stephanie goes to the sink, gets a glass of water and goes to her room.)

Scene 17

(First full cast rehearsal. Everyone is down in the audience talking to each other. They are waiting for Prof. Childs to arrive. Todd is sitting backwards in a chair talking to Noelle and Stephanie, who are sitting in the row behind his. Prof. Childs is a little late.)

Stephanie: I heard you got an A plus on your Lit Paper?

Todd: Yeah, I guess staying up late pays off.

Noelle: It was the only one.

Stephanie: Prof. Morris grades hard.

Noelle: Youre telling me. I havent gotten above a B in that class.

Todd: What scenes are we rehearsing today?

Noelle: I think scenes two, four and six.

Stephanie: Scene two is the Frake family, four is the State Fair, the first full chorus, and six is Pat and Margy.

Todd: Well Im understudying in scene two. Is that how you say it, understudying? It just sounds so weird.

Noelle: I guess. How else would you?

(All of a sudden the main entrance doors fly open. Everyone turns their heads and stare in amazement. Andrea walks in, there is music playing. Her hair is being blown by some invisible wind. Everyones mouths drop. She walks down the aisle in slow motion like a model walking down a catwalk. Everything is in slow motion still and she gets to the end of the aisle and stops abruptly. The slow motion ends and the music stops like when a record is stopped about halfway through Andreas first line.)

Andrea: What the hell is everyone staring at?

Full Cast: Nothing!

Andrea: Then get back to whatever the hell you were doing. Jesus Christ on a cross, youd think people could be a little smarter.(She walks over to Todd.) Hello Todd.

Todd: Hi Andrea.(He gives her a menacing look and she shoots it right back.)

Andrea: (under her breath.)Fine. Stephanie, Noelle, How are you?

Noelle:(shocked) F-F-Fine.

Stephanie: Good. You know, I went over the script and looked at your part.

Andrea: Really, anything interesting?

Stephanie: (She loses all trepidation from her voice.) Oh yeah. Your songs are so amazing. They are so much better than Bonnies and I know that youll sing the amazingly. And your lines are excellent. They have so much, I mean, Well, I would love to have your part.

Andrea: As long as you dont run me over. (She looks at Todd, smirks, and walks away.)

Noelle: What was that all about?

Todd: Nothing.

(Just then the doors fly open again. The music starts back up. Everybody looks up and stares again. Then, Prof. Childs walks in and the music stops. Everybody looks away.)

Prof. Childs: Sorry Im late. I hope were all ready to begin. Megan, is everybody here?

Megan:(talking to Prof. Childs as he walks toward everybody) Yes Everybody for scene two is present. Andrea, Mike, Bonnie, and Matt. The understudies are accounted for as well.

(By now, the leads are standing on stage and the four understudies are sitting in four seats in the front row.)

Todd: (To Katie)Here that? The understudies are accounted for. Its like were dead corpses recovered after an earthquake.

Katie: (laughs) Yeah, were just the leftovers.

Sherry: Excuse me, I prefer non-eaten foodstuffs.

(They all laugh.)

Katie: Sorry, I didnt mean to insult you.

Sherry: Youre forgiven understudy buddy.

(Back up on stage)

Prof. Childs: (gesturing towards Mike and Andrea.) Okay, Mrs. Ladd taught you two the dance at yesterdays rehearsal, right?

Mike: Right.

Prof. Childs: When you start the song, youll be here. Then, sing your verse and Andrea, you start yours. While youre singing, move stage right toward Mike. Then, do your dance. Matt?

Matt: Yeah?

Prof. Childs: You enter from stage left with Bonnie when your verse starts. Not before or after, right when it starts. Got it?

Matt: Yes sir.

Prof. Childs: Watch this scene understudies. Its very important. Okay, lets try it.

(He goes to sit in the audience and the music starts. Mike begins to sing Our State Fair and Andrea comes in when her verse starts. She moves stage right toward Mike. They meet and start to dance. Mike looks nervous and Andrea looks as sure as ever. Then, Mike steps on Andreas feet. She screams and the music stops.)

Andrea: Shit! That hurt! What the hell are you trying to do, break my toes?

Mike: No, I just...

Andrea:(interrupting) Just what? Jesus Mike! You should know this goddamn dance, I do.

Mike: Hey, Calm down.

Andrea: Okay, Ill calm down while you try to ruin my career. How will I dance with broken feet you idiot.

Prof. Childs: (he stands up in his seat in the audience.) Okay Andrea. Will somebody get her some ice?

How are you?

Andrea: I think Ill live. But I dont know about him.(gestures toward Mike.)

Mike: Youve got your shoes on.

Andrea: They dont protect me from you weight.

Mike: That really hurt.

Andrea: You want me to say sorry. Nobody gets a sorry from me. Especially you. Who do you people think I am, some small time actress from the middle of a cow pasture. Im a star. Dont you even think youre my equal. None of you goddamn idiots.

Prof. Childs:(To himself) Cant shut up the goddamn prima donna. Can someone get me a Tums. Okay, lets take it from Matts entrance. Ready Matt?

Matt: Yeah.

Prof. Childs: Okay. Start the music. (He puts his hand on his head and sits down.)

(The music begins. Matt comes out on stage and sings. That goes to the background while the camera goes to Stephanie and Noelle.)

Stephanie: Is it always like this?

Noelle: You havent seen anything yet, honey.

Stephanie: You mean it gets worse?

Noelle: Oh yeah. (Two girls walk up to them. They are chorus members.)

Amy: I think its a lot of fun.

Noelle: Its fun, just a lot of work.

April: Just wait to run. (they walk away)

Noelle: I think its a lot of fun. You would.

Stephanie: Whats that mean? Wait, what did she mean by run?

Noelle: Never mind, theyre almost done with the scene. Then its us.

Prof. Childs: Okay, thats good for today. Chorus are we ready for warm-ups.

Some chorus members: Yes!

(They go through the warm-up routine. It wont all be shown.)

Prof. Childs Okay, time to run.

(The screen goes blank and the next thing you see is Stephanie, Todd, and Noelle panting for breath.)

Todd: (breathing heavily) You get used to it after a while. The first few times are the hardest.

Stephanie: (breathing heavily) When I was in high school, we ran about five laps in a smaller auditorium. Oh my God, that was like fifteen laps! I think Im gonna die. Its worse than soccer!

Noelle: Not quite. (She seems to be handling the excursion well.)

Stephanie: I cant wait to go home and sleep tonight.

Noelle: Relax, we havent even rehearsed yet.

Todd and Stephanie: Oh my God!

(First, the scene shows Stephanie, Todd, and Noelle along with the rest of the cast learning the big chorus number to Our State Fair. It is very difficult, but begins to look excellent after about an hour.)

Stephanie: I bet this looks awesome.

Noelle: Hopefully, it will win us Best Dance Ensemble again this year.

Stephanie: What are you talking about?

Todd: Stars of Tomorrow, its a nationwide contest for all major theatre colleges.

Noelle: Youre up against the best of the best.

Todd: Its kind of like the Oscars, but more like the Tonys. We won best dance ensemble last year. Andrea was nominated for supporting actress.

Stephanie: Did she win?

Noelle: No. The girl that beat her was signed for a contract and starred in this big movie that made millions. Its like a gateway to Hollywood.

Prof. Childs: (from the audience) Okay guys, looks terrific. Keep working on it. All I need are Bonnie and Brent for the next scene. the rest of you can leave.

Stephanie: Lets go!

Noelle: Todd, ready?

Todd: Yes maam. Lets go.

Prof. Childs: (talking to Bonnie who is onstage with Brent.) Okay Lets hear it. I really want to hear it good today.

(Brent starts to sing with the music to Isnt it Kinda Fun? When Bonnies part starts, nothing come out.)

Prof. Childs: Umm, Bonnie, thats you.

Bonnie: (meekly) I know.

Brent: Hey, listen. Its only me and him. We wont judge you.

Bonnie: I know, I just..... I dont know.

Prof. Childs: Are we ready?

Bonnie: Yes.

(The music starts again and Brent sings. When Bonnies part starts, she begins to sing, but not loudly. Then, the rehearsal is over. Bonnie walks off stage and over to her coat where Prof. Childs confronts her.)

Prof. Childs: Now listen, I thought I could pick you because I knew you could play this part. Theres nothing to be afraid of, just sing. Let it flow from your mouth. I cant have my lead be like a little mouse. I know you can play this part. Dont make me regret it.

Bonnie: Yes sir.

(She turns around and walks up the aisle with her head hanging. She opens the door and leaves.)

Scene 18

(Back at Burger World. The group is there. Pretty much everyone. They are sitting at two tables and talking.)

Stephanie: That was something new.

Noelle: Yeah, that dance is gonna look great.

Jessica: I didnt think that wed be able to get everyone in the chorus to learn that dance. When I put it together, I thought it would be way too hard, but I guess weve got good dancers this year.

Weston: Leave it to Jessica to put that together.

Stephanie: I love the one part....

(Bonnie walks in, crying. Brent comes in behind her.)

Stephanie: Oh, Bonnie, what is it?

Bonnie: Nothing, I just...

Weston: What is it? Tell me. (He gets up and goes to his sister.)

Bonnie: I just got a little lecture from Prof. Childs, thats all. Its nothing.

Weston: Do you want me to go talk to him?

Bonnie: Weston, No! Its my fault anyway. I cant sing.

Stephanie: Dont say that.

Bonnie: Its true. Today, Im gonna promise you and myself that I will change. Im gonna learn this part, no matter what it takes.

(Weston goes back and sits next to Jessica. Bonnie sits down with Katie.)

Todd: Dont worry about it, its only first rehearsal and its over, so lets forget it.

Jessica: Who wants a burger?

(some people answer.)

Stephanie: Well, weve only got three more months and the stress has already started.

Noelle: Those three months are gonna go fast.

Scene 19

(Todd and Stephanie are in the front row in the auditorium in the two seats right next to the aisle. A few other people are there. Bonnie and Brent are practicing a dance on stage. Christina is standing next to the stage watching. Some others are in the audience doing homework or something.)

Stephanie: Did you get the answer for question three?

Todd: Yeah. I think that you have to read the paragraph on page 140. It has it in there. It has something to do with bull markets or something.

Stephanie: Wheres Noelle?

Todd: I dont know. You live with her.

Stephanie: Anyway...

Christina: That little bitch better watch where she puts her hands.

Todd: Isnt Bonnie one of your best friends?

Christina: Yeah, but I dont let anyone touch my man.

Todd: Thats so sweet.

Stephanie: Christina, weve got rehearsal for Vivian and Jeanne tonight, right?

Christian: Yeah, I think so.
(Jessica and Weston come walking down the aisle side by side. They get to the end of the aisle and split up in opposite directions. Jessica goes to a table and picks up some swing videos. Weston waits by the piano. They dont say a word.)

Stephanie: Hi Jessica.

(Jessica walks by her a goes to Weston. They go up the side stairs, on the stage and out the back doors. As soon as they leave, angry yelling can be heard from the back hall.)

Stephanie: What was that all about?

Todd: Weston and Jessica have this kind of relationship where theyre always either fighting or making out. Theres no in between. Its like some kind of a cycle. Youll get used to it.

Stephanie: Theyre getting kind of loud. Do you think I should go calm them down?

Todd: You can. I dont know if itll help.

(Stephanie gets up and walks up the stairs and across the stage. Just then, the yelling stops. Stephanie opens the back door and Jessica and Weston are pretty much making out. Stephanie closes the door before being seen.)

Stephanie: (to Todd in the audience.) I think theyll be okay.

Todd: (to himself) For now.

Scene 20

(Instead of taking everyone through three months of rehearsals, there will just be scenes of them. All of the cast singing and dancing. And Prof. Childs directing us. In one scene, Stephanie, Noelle, and Todd are doing the Will Rogers shake your head dance, in another, Matt and Jessica are dancing together. In another, Prof. Childs is beating a chair saying, No, No, No! Thats not how we do it.(Sighs) Lets take it from the top. In one, Andrea is actually smiling and others are just scenes from the show. Stuff like that. We begin to see changes in some of the characters. Bonnie becomes a lot more sure of herself. Andrea actually is nice to some people, and Jessica and Weston are probably engaged by now, theyre so lovey dovey. Then, it stops on a rehearsal about one month in. Mike and Andrea are rehearsing the same scene Mike stepped on Andrea in.)

Mike: Our State Fair is A Great... (he steps on Andreas foot again.) Oh my God, Im sorry!

Andrea: (She kind of laughs when she sees how scared Mike is.) Thats okay.

Mike: I dont weigh too much for you, do I?

Andrea: Im sorry about that. There, see, you got a sorry from me. Hey, maybe if you step with your left foot instead of your right, itll work better.

Mike: Its worth a try.

(They perform the dance again and it is flawless.)

Mike: Thanks Andrea.

Andrea: It was nothing. Oh my God, Im not actually turning into a nice person, am I?

Prof. Childs: Okay, excellent. Lets move on to Bonnie and Brents scene. (he waits a second. Brent walks on stage by himself.) Where is she?

Brent: I havent seen her.

(All of a sudden the front doors open and theres another one of those scenes. Only this time, its Bonnie who walks in. She gets to the bottom of the aisle and smiles.)

Bonnie: Sorry Im late Childs, but I had more important things to do.

Prof. Childs: Excuse me?

Bonnie: Oh yeah. I bought this really nice sweater.

(She walks on stage as Prof. Childs and Brent stare in amazement at her audacity.)

Bonnie: Well are we gonna do this or not? I could be shopping.

Prof. Childs: (dumbfounded) Start the music.

(Brent sings his part of Isnt it Kinda Fun? and then Bonnie sings. Her voice nearly matches Andreas in strength and beauty. Everyone stares in amazement.)

Prof. Childs: That was perfect. Once more and then you two are finished.

(They sing again and leave the stage. Bonnie walks up to Katie and Megan, who are sitting in the audience.)

Megan: That was amazing Bonnie, youre not drunk, are you?

Bonnie: No, Im not drunk you stupid idiot.. Ive just lost my inhibitions.

Katie: Still, you should have a little respect for Prof. Childs. After all, he did give you this part.

Bonnie: Who the hell are you to tell me, after all, youre not a lead, youre just an understudy.

(Bonnie looks away and then walks away. Katies eyes well up with tears, after all, her best friend just insulted her with what hurt the most. She covers her eyes. Megan puts her arm around her, but the damage is done. Katie runs away, out of the auditorium. Liz, Christina and Sherry come over to see what happened.)

Liz: What was that all about?

Megan: It seems our friend, Bonnie, has a little bit of an ego problem.

Sherry: Yeah, I could tell the way she came in here today.

Christina: Like some supermodel.

Liz: Whatd she say to Katie?

Megan: Youre not a lead, youre an understudy.

Liz: She said that?

Megan: Yeah.

Liz: Who the hell does she think she is?

Sherry: It looks as if the fame is going to her head. Only she can realize whats going on now.

Liz: I hope its not too late.

Christina: I hope Katies alright.

Sherry: I hope she comes back.

Megan: I hope she realizes the mistake she just made.

Scene 21

(Jessica is on stage dancing with the Fairtones. Weston is in the audience watching.)

Weston: Isnt she amazing? (hes kind of talking to himself, but Rick is behind him.)

Rick: Yeah, shes pretty good.

Weston: Oh, I didnt know you were there.

Rick: Well, I wanted to talk to you about Bonnie.

Weston: I dont want to talk about that. Im still trying to forget it.

Rick: This isnt about that. Im trying to forget that too. Its what ruined our friendship.

Weston: I know. If its not about that, what is it?

Rick: Everyone is talking about how shes been acting lately. Shes been a real bitch. Its like her and Andrea switched personalities.

Weston: Yeah, now that youve mentioned it...

Rick: (interrupting) I just figured that youre her brother and maybe you could do something. I mean, even Katie and Megan havent been able to get through to her.

Weston: Youre right, Ill say something to her. ( He begins to walk away and then turns around.) Rick, I dont hate you.

Rick: I dont hate you either. Ill see you around. ( He turns and walks away.)

(Weston walks away to go find Bonnie.)

Scene 22

( A rehearsal has just ended and Brent is in the audience getting his things. Matt gets his things and goes up to him.)

Matt: Hey Brent, are we still on for that party tonight? Christinas coming too, right?

Brent: Actually, no. Ive gotta cancel on you.

Matt: Why? Whats wrong?

Brent: Oh, nothing, I just....

(Greg and Christina come up to them. She is on a cell phone.)

Greg: (interrupts) Brent, are you ready to go?

Christina: How long does it take to get there?

Brent: Yeah, just let me...

Matt: (interrupts) Wait a minute, youre still going to the party. Youre bringing Greg instead of me?

Brent: Hey listen, I brought you to a few parties, but it just wasnt working. My friends thought you were an asshole. Face it, you are. Youre a spoiled little bitch. Even Christina thinks that.

Christina: (shes chewing gum.) Yeah, like I was the one that said youre a spoiled little bitch.

Brent: Shut up ho.

Christina: Hey, watch it.

Brent: They didnt like you. And neither do I. Sorry, but youre just not the right kinda person.( He walks away. Christina goes with him.)

Christina: Is this party in the valley?

Brent: 98 average and youre that fucking dumb.

Christina: I dont get it.

Matt: Wait...

Greg: Tough luck Matt. Sorry about that.

(He walks away. Matt is just standing there in awe. The camera goes to Todd, Noelle, and Stephanie.)

Noelle: Are we ready to go?

Stephanie: Im sick of Burger World. Cant we go somewhere else?

Todd: Well, if youre willing to spend a few bucks and get a little dressed up, I know a great place.

Stephanie: Im game.

Noelle: Sound great. Where is it?

Todd: Its downtown. Chez Brulee

Noelle: A little rich for my blood.

Todd: Oh, stop whining. Listen, Its on me.

Stephanie: No, you dont have to...

Todd: (interrupts) Its fine.

(Just then, Matt walks over.)

Matt: Hey, what are you guys doing tonight?

Todd: Were going to Chez Brulee.

Matt: Sounds great. (hes really sad.) Well, see ya later.

(He begins to walk away and Stephanie looks at Todd.)

Todd: (to Stephanie) Alright. (to Matt) Hey Matt, if youre not doing anything, wed love to have you come with us. (He looks back at Stephanie) That is only if Andrea can come.

Stephanie: Are you crazy? She hates me.

Todd: Well, we dont even have to go if...

Stephanie: Fine.

Matt: Are you sure? I dont want to ruin...

Todd: Its fine. Itll be fun. Listen, go home, get some nice clothes on and well meet there at seven. Hows that sound?

Stephanie: Sounds great.

Noelle: Okay. Well see you at seven.

(They leave. )

Scene 23

(Outside of Chez Brulee. Three cars pull up. Stephanie and Noelle get out of one. They are dressed up very nicely. Todd and Andrea get out of another. They are laughing. Matt gets out of the last one. Its an expensive car, and he is dressed nicely as well. They meet right in front of the doors and go in.)

Man behind counter: Welcome to Chez Brulee. How many?

Todd: Five.

Man: Right this way.

(They follow him to a table.)

Stephanie: Oh my God, its so nice here.

Andrea: I come here all the time.

Noelle: Its beautiful.

Man: Can I start you off with something to drink?

Todd: Everyone is twenty one. So I guess we will be having champagne.

Stephanie: Ill just have water.

Noelle: Me too.

Todd: Dont get cheap Have whatever you want.

Stephanie: Dont worry, I will. (She laughs.)

Todd: Lets see. How about a bottle of the vintage Chembroie 1990.

Andrea: Well, I want something good. Bring me a martini or something.

Todd: Ill have one of them too.

Man: Thank you.

(He walks away.)

Andrea: Now that were here, theres something I have to say to you Stephanie. I just cant hold it in anymore, and I wont be able to sit here with you if I dont say it.

(Todd looks at Andrea, waiting for her to say something mean.)

Stephanie: (waiting for some sort of insult.) What is it Andrea?

Andrea: You were right about my part. I do love it now that I have it. I wouldnt want anything else.

Stephanie: Well thank you... I think.

Andrea: Im sorry that we got off on the wrong foot. I guess I get off on the wrong foot with everyone. Todd helped me see that. It really hurts, laying in bed, crying yourself to sleep knowing that nobody likes you and its all your fault. Thats how it was for me when I was in high school and I made up my mind that Id change in college. I wouldnt let people not like me because Id not like them first. Thats why Im trying to change. And its hard. Its not easy just liking everybody all of a sudden. You know?

Stephanie: Well youre trying, and thats what matters.

Matt: Well, since everyones apologizing, I guess I better say Im sorry for being such an asshole to everyone. All I wanted was friends, but I just pushed people farther away. I realized that today.

Todd: It doesnt matter now. The shows two weeks away. Now that weve all made up, lets order.

Noelle: Sounds good.

(They order and their food comes. They are eating and laughing.)

Todd: (to Stephanie) Here try this.

Noelle: Its really good.

Todd: I guess you werent lying. This is gonna cost me a fortune.

Matt: Ill pay for some.

Todd: Dont worry about it. You guys just split the tip.

Andrea: Anyone want dessert?

Noelle: No thanks. Last time I came here, I ordered the cheesecake.

Andrea: You didnt like it?

Noelle: Well, I moved the whipped cream off the top and there was mold growing on the top of the slice.

Andrea: Thats terrible. I would never expect that from a place like this.

Noelle: One of the waitresses tried to hide it with the whipped cream, I just know it.

Andrea: I hope you all can forgive me for everything I did at the beginning of the show.

Stephanie: I never blamed you for anything.

Andrea: I just feel so good about myself now that Im a better person. Lets make this show great. Why did that last line sound so cheesy?

Stephanie: Sounds good.

Todd: Now that were all friends, lets get going.

Scene 24

(One week before the show. The set is complete. It looks awesome. Most of the chorus is on stage, although some of them are in the audience. Weston is talking to Jessica when he looks over and sees Bonnie talking to Brent. He walks over to them.)

Bonnie: Well, if youre not going to get the scene right...

Brent: Ill get the scene right. Dont worry about it.

Bonnie: Well you see Brent, I am worried, because I have to look good up there. If you make me look stupid...

Brent: What the hell is so bad about the scene?

Bonnie: Have you even seen it? It looks like shit.

Weston: Hey, whats going on over here?

Brent: Im not sure. But youre sister is a real bitch. Maybe you can talk to her.(He walks away.)

Weston: (To Brent) Ill try. (To Bonnie) What the hell is wrong with you?

(Scene change to Stephanie, Noelle and Todd.)

Todd: Weve got another week.

Stephanie: Its getting close.

Noelle: Its gonna be good. Dont worry.

(Andrea walks by.)

Stephanie: Hi Andrea.

Andrea: What the hell do you want? (there is a pause. Everyone is looking at Andrea.) Just kidding! Hey whats wrong with Katie?

Todd: What do you mean?

(He looks over and sees her talking to Prof. Childs. She walks away.)

Todd: Ill be right back.

(He walks over to Katie, who is getting her stuff. She is crying.)

Todd: Hey, UB. Whats wrong? ( UB= understudy buddy)

Katie: Im leaving.

Todd: Where are you going?

Katie: Im leaving the school. Im leaving this place and never coming back.

Todd: What the hell are you talking about? You cant just leave one week before the show.

Katie: I have to. I cant even look at her anymore. That bitch used to be my best friend. How could she do this to me Todd?

Todd: What are you talking about?

Katie: Bonnie, she hurt me so much. She was my best friend. Now, shes some big star. Shes a lead. And shes forgotten where she comes from. Bye Todd, I hope the show is good. (She turns around are runs out the doors. Todd stands there for a second and starts to walk toward Bonnie and Weston. Another scene change back to them.)

Bonnie: What are you talking about. Theres nothing wrong with me.

Weston: Well it seems as if youve got a problem with everyone all of a sudden.

Bonnie: Remember that day at Burger World?
Weston: Yeah, what about it?

Bonnie: I promised myself Id change. I promised myself that Id be a new and stronger person and guess what? I am. And I kinda like the new me. Im not afraid of anything. I can say whatever I want.

Todd: (He just walked up to them.) I guess you can. You really hurt Katie.

Bonnie: That? Shell get over it.

Todd: Yeah, Im sure she will. She just left. Bonnie, she quit. Shes dropping out because of what you did to her. She thought you were her best friend.

Weston: Jesus Bonnie, cant you see what youve become.

Bonnie: Thats her problem. Shes too weak and sensitive. She needs to get a life.

Weston: Real nice Bonnie. Dont forget who your friends are. You wont have them soon.( He walks away.)

Todd: Bonnie, what happened to the sweet little girl I used to know?

Bonnie: Who, the nice little girl you were in love with? What the hell was so special about her? Whatd she ever do?

Todd: She was nice. She was worth being around.( He walks away too.)

Bonnie: (screaming at him.) I dont need you! I dont need any of you! Look at me. Im something. Im a lead.

(Todd turns around)

Todd: Youre nothing Bonnie. (he turns and leaves. She stands there for a minute.)

Bonnie: (to herself) I dont need them. I dont need anybody. Im a lead. A lead.

Scene 25

(It is March 15th, dress rehearsal has just finished. We cant show it because it will ruin the upcoming scenes. Prof. Childs gathers everyone on stage.)

Prof. Childs: You guys, it looked great. Theres not much I can say. It was perfect. Youre going to go on tomorrow night and blow them away. Ive seen improvement from everyone. When you get on stage tomorrow, remember that youre part of something amazing. Youll always have friends here. Congratulations. This is going to be a success. Bundle up on your way home. Its freezing out there. The roads are icy, so drive safely. I need you all tomorrow.

(Everybody cheers. They go down to the audience and bundle up like Prof. Childs said.)

Jessica: This show is gonna be great.

Weston: Youre gonna be great.

Jessica: Oh, thank you, thats so sweet.

Weston: I know.

Todd: (Jokingly) Okay, thats enough. Youre making me sick.

Stephanie: Im ready to go, are you Noelle?

Noelle: Yep, see you all tomorrow.

Jessica: Bye guys. (Noelle and Stephanie leave)

Todd: Ill see you tomorrow.( He leaves and runs to catch up with Stephanie and Noelle.)

Weston: Ready to go?

Jessica: Yes.

Bonnie: (exhaustedly) I cant wait to go home.

Weston: Bonnie, do you need a ride?

Bonnie: No, Ive got my car.

Weston: Well, just drive safely.

Bonnie: I will. What, do you think I cant drive or something?

Weston: Just looking out for you.

Bonnie: Well stop.

Sherry: (she is leaving) Bonnie, break a leg tomorrow.

Bonnie: Wouldnt you like that?

Sherry: Whatever. (she walks away.)

(They leave. In the parking lot, everyone is getting in their cars.)

Jessica: It is icy out here. I hope we can get home all right.

Weston: I miss summer. If I ever complain that its too hot, slap me.

Jessica: I will. (she laughs)

(Bonnie is walking out to her car and slips.)

Bonnie: Damn it!

Weston: Are you all right?

Bonnie: Im fine.

(She gets into her car, starts it and pulls out of the parking lot. Immediately, she begins to swerve and crashes into a tree. Weston and Jessica quickly get into their car, start it, and race over to the accident site. Weston runs over to Bonnie. She is unconscious in her car. Her head has hit the steering wheel.)

Weston: Jessica, call the ambulance, hurry!

(Jessica pulls out her cell phone and dials 9-1-1.)

Jessica: Hello, theres been an accident right outside Midlakes University. Please hurry up and send an ambulance. Theres a girl and she unconscious. (Jessica starts to cry.) I dont know if shes all right.

Weston: Its okay. Theyll be here soon.

(Another car pulls up along side. Todd gets out.)

Todd: Is she all right?

Jessica: I dont know, I dont know.

(Ambulance sounds are heard in the background as Todd and Jessica stand and watch Weston and Bonnie.)

Scene 26

(At the hospital. Todd, Weston, Jessica, and Katie are around Bonnies bed. She is still out cold. A nurse comes in and checks on her.)

Weston: Is she all right?

Nurse: Shell be okay, shes suffered a concussion and has a broken leg. Other than that, shell be fine.

Weston: Her leg is broken?

Nurse: Yes, shell probably be in a cast for a month. (She leaves)

Jessica: The shows tomorrow and Bonnies the lead. This isnt good. Did anybody call Prof. Childs?

Todd: Yeah, I did. Hes on his way.

Weston: Look, shes coming to.

Katie: (Leans over Bonnie.) Bonnie, Bonnie can you hear me? Im right here.

Bonnie: Katie, Im so sorry. I didnt mean what I said. I realize how bad Ive been lately. Please forgive me.

Katie: I do. I didnt drop out or quit the show. I knew youd come to your senses sooner or later. And I figured, even if you didnt, it wasnt worth quitting.

Weston: I guess that bump on the head did the trick.

Bonnie: Am I all right?

Katie: Youve got a concussion and a broken leg. Youre not going to be able to go on tomorrow.

Bonnie: No! Ive worked too hard for this. This cant be happening! Im gonna go on tomorrow!

Weston: Bonnie, youll be in a cast. You cant. Just deal with it. Sherry will be going on for you tomorrow.

Bonnie: Oh.(She takes a second to think. She is almost in tears.) Thats good. She deserves to go on. Im over myself anyway.

Katie: Its about time.

Bonnie: I needed something like this to happen, I just wish it didnt have to be now.

(Prof. Childs arrives.)

Prof. Childs: Oh no, what happened?

Todd: She slipped on the ice after rehearsal. Her car hit a tree. Her leg is broken. Were lucky its not anything worse.

Prof. Childs: What am I going to do?

Todd: Prof. Childs, youve got Sherry. She knows Bonnies part.

Prof. Childs: Youre right. Ive got Sherry. I have to go and call her. Oh my God, theres so much to do and so little time to get ready. ( He leaves.)

Bonnie: I guess my dreams of being an actress are up in smoke now.

Weston: You never wanted to be an actress, you always wanted to be a teacher.

Bonnie: I know, I was just joking.

Katie: Look on the bright side, now you can watch the show.

Bonnie: Tomorrow, you guys are gonna go on and youre gonna do great. And Ill be in the audience screaming for you.

Todd: Its about time you returned to your normal self. I missed you. For a while, I thought you were gonna take over for Andrea.

Bonnie: So did I. But I realized that it was Katie and Megan, and you, and all my friends that really mattered. I guess this all happened when I was out of it. I guess I realized I was wrong when I was unconscious.

Katie: You always knew somewhere.

Weston: Well, weve got to get home. The doctor said youve got to stay overnight. Ill be back to pick you up tomorrow. Are you gonna be okay?

Bonnie: Ill be fine. See you tomorrow.

(Weston, Jessica and Katie leave. Todd is the last to walk out the door.)

Bonnie: Todd?

Todd: Yeah?

Bonnie: Thanks.

Todd: No problem. Hey?

Bonnie: What?

Todd: Good bye.

(He leaves. Bonnie sighs and lays back in her bed. She starts to cry.)

Bonnie: Tomorrow the show will go on without me. All those hours for nothing, but I guess I learned my lesson. Tomorrow, the show will go on.

Scene 27

(Right before the show. Everyone is in costume and make up. Prof. Childs comes backstage.)

Prof. Childs: Five minutes until showtime.( He leaves.)

(Stephanie, Todd, and Noelle are together, as always.)

Todd: This is it.

Stephanie: Its almost time. Noelle, those three months went by pretty fast.

Noelle: They always do. All that time flies by and these are the longest five minutes in the world. And once youre out there, you get this feeling in your stomach, but it goes away instantly. Its like, finally, all that work has paid off and youre out there dancing for five thousand people.

Stephanie: Theres a full house?

Todd: Of course. There always is.

Stephanie: Great, were gonna do great.

(Andrea walks over.)

Andrea: Good luck you guys.

Stephanie: You too. (she waits a second.) Andrea, how many shows have you done?

Andrea: I dont know, about twenty.

Stephanie: Well good luck. You deserve it.

Andrea: Thank you Stephanie. It really does mean a lot.

(She walks away. Bonnie is wheeled in by Megan.)

Megan: We just wanted to wish you all good luck before you go on. Were almost in the front row.

Full Cast: Thank You!

Bonnie: (rolls to Sherry.) Hey Sherry, break a leg. (They both laugh.)

Sherry: Thanks Bonnie, Im glad to see you back to your normal self.

Bonnie: Youll do great.

Matt: (he comes up to Bonnie) Hey, now that Im not your brother anymore, remember what we talked about before auditions?

Bonnie: Yeah.

Matt: So will you?

Bonnie: Youre not trying to take advantage of me now that Im disabled, are you?

Matt: Of course not!

Bonnie: Matt?

Matt: What is it?

Bonnie: I dont know if...

Matt: Oh, I understand. I mean... hey dont worry about it. I understand.

Bonnie: Its just that theres someone else whos been under my nose this whole time.

Matt: I kinda figured. Anyway... actually, theres been someone under my nose this whole time too. Listen...

Bonnie: What?

Matt: I think I gotta go find Liz. Thanks.

Bonnie: Well, Ive gotta go find someone too.

Matt: Good luck.

Bonnie: Thanks.

Matt: Youre welcome.

Bonnie: Good luck to you too Matt.

(They hug. Matt walks over to Liz.)

Liz: Hey cutie.

Matt: Liz, I love you.

Liz: Oh really?

Matt: Yeah, I really do.

Liz: Are you trying to ask me out?

Matt: I think.

Liz: Well, you know Im gonna say yes.

Matt: I know.

Christina: Are you and Matt going out now?

Liz: I think.

Sherry: How cute.

(Bonnie approaches Todd)

Todd: Hey beautiful.

Bonnie: Todd...

Todd: Whats up? (he smiles)

Bonnie: If someone you loved never returned your love but they they decided maybe that returning that love was the right thing to do, could you forget about everything that happened?

Todd: I think that could be arranged.(smirk)

Bonnie: Yeah.( they laugh)

(The camera goes to Weston and Jessica.)

Weston: Are you ready?

Jessica: Im really nervous.

Weston: Youre gonna blow them away.

Jessica: I love you Weston Hemenway.

Weston: Id kiss you, but Ive got my make up on.(they kiss anyway. Rick walks by.) Good luck Rick.

Rick: You too.

(The camera goes to Mike and Andrea)

Mike: Were opening this show, so lets make it big.

Andrea: Is there any other way to do it?

(The camera goes to Todd and Stephanie.)

Todd: Everything kind of worked itself out, didnt it?

Stephanie: Isnt that how it always works?

Todd: I guess. Are you ready?

Stephanie: Ready as Ill ever be.

Todd: Well then, lets blow this mother out!

(They both start to laugh. Then the music starts.)

Stephanie: Here we go!

(The show starts. It will probably be shown like the rehearsals. Like on Center Stage when they show the recital. Just some parts of it, especially the parts with the main characters in them. When the show is finished, we come out for curtain call. Bonnie and Megan are in the audience applauding.)

Megan: That was awesome!

Bonnie: Couldnt have done better myself.

(The camera gets one last shot of all the main characters and some of the important secondary characters during curtain call. Then, the curtain comes down and there is a black out.)

Scene 28

(The next thing you see is a man on stage. It is not the Midlakes stage. He is dressed in a tuxedo and has an envelope in his hand.)

Man: And the award for best supporting actress goes to...(He opens the envelope.)

Andrea Burch for her performance as Melissa Frake in Midlakes Universitys production of State Fair.

(The crowd is clapping and The Midlakes contingent is going crazy.)

Andrea: (she walks up on stage crying and accepts her award.) I just have to thank my friends, who I didnt have at the beginning of the show, but by the end, meant the most to me. I couldnt have done it without them. Thank you all.

(The camera goes to Todd and Stephanie in the audience.)

Todd: And in the end, everything always works out. Another happy ending.

Stephanie: Just the way it should be.

(Black out. Roll Credits.)
